Preparing children for the outing

Involving Children
An introductory page to the activities and worksheets detailed below and includes links to websites for further information.

What is a Museum or Gallery?
A useful activity to start the outing project exploring the nature of collections and collecting.

What will I see?
This activity helps prepare the children for a visit to a venue that you have chosen and how that links to a project, topic or subject currently studied. It encourages the children to think about what they can find out or investigate on their visit.

Where are we going?
Letting the children know the itinerary and structure of the outing is important. This helps keep the children informed about what to expect on the visit, where they are going and "domestic" information about the visit. This helps answer those important questions that all young children ask such as "When are we going on the bus?" "Where will I have my dinner?" and "Where are the toilets?"

What do I need to take?
This activity saves any confusion for both children and their parents making clear what can and cannot be taken. You can be as strict or as flexible as you want, it does depend on the nature of your outing.

What do I do
This should give the children a very clear picture of what your expectations are for the outing and exactly what they will do at the venue. It also gives suggestions on ways to record what they have experienced during the visit. This of course depends on type of venue and the age of the children. Some venues are very much hands on, so photos, videos, tape recorders are best whilst other venues need a more pencil and paper approach.

Starting your own collection, museum or gallery
This can be as small or as large as you want from a little corner of a room or table to a whole room or hallway. It's up to you. Suggestions along with links to other websites can make it become a reality.

Keeping a record of the outing.
Not so much an activity but some suggestions of what children could do either to add to and develop any existing work or by keeping it simple.
